Last night, VH1 aired its annual Hip Hop Honors paying homage to the 25th year of Def Jam Recordings. Since I have a discriminating fondness for old school, shows like this always get me excited because they remind me of a time when life was easy, breezy and worry free. I bobbed my head as the Roots performed a fierce rendition of LL Cool J’s Rock the Bells and literally jumped off the couch when Public Enemy took the stage with the classic Rebel without a Pause! Listening to the poignant recollections of Def Jam’s humble beginnings to the conglomerate it’s become today made me more aware of not only the label’s rich history of artists, but the sustainability of the Hip Hop as a whole. What some thought would be a passing phase has truly become a culture, a movement, and I am proud to have been raised up with it. Here’s a bird’s eye view of my favorite performance of the night!
